The Whirling Dervishes

Dance, when you're broken open. Dance, if you've torn the bandage off.
Dance, in the middle of the fighting.
Dance, in your blood.
Dance, when you're perfectly free.
Struck, the dancers hear a  tambourine inside them, as a wave turns to foam on its very top, begin.
Maybe you don't hear that tambourine, or the tree leaves clapping time.

Close the ears on your head that listen mostly to lies and cynical jokes. There are other things to hear and see:
dance-music, and a brilliant city inside the Soul.

Spinning is a religious act in Turkey; Sufi is a tradition, which began within Islam in the eighth century. Some Sufis claim that their experience leads them towards the heart of all religions.

A Whirling Dervish believes that his turning brings him into closer union with God. His right hand is raised towards God and his left hand is pointed to the earth, passing on God’s spiritual gifts to the human race.

It is a fact that in the world there are many things that revolve or circulate, such as electrons and protons in atoms, the blood in our bodies, the movement of the earth and stars.

The turning of the whole body in this way is seen as a way of participating freely in God’s natural order of things. It is a way of ‘remembering’ God.

Dictionary meaning

Whirling Dervish (wurl-ing dur-vish) n. 1. A mystical
dancer who stands between the material and cosmic
worlds. His dance is part of a sacred ceremony
in which the dervish rotates in a precise rhythm.
He represents the earth revolving on its axis while
orbiting the sun. The purpose of the ritual whirling
is for the dervish to empty himself of all distracting
thoughts, placing him in trance; released from
his body he conquers dizziness.
